A pair of original Barcelona chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe and produced by Knoll before 1964. This is an early and original pair of the iconic Mies van der Rohe classic in chrome plated steel and original black leather upholstery.
Possibly the 20th Century’s most recognisable furniture design, this chair was originally designed for the Weimar Republic’s Pavillion for the Barcelona Industrial Exposition of 1929 at which the King and Queen of Spain would be in attendance.
Knoll first produced the Barcelona chair in 1947 and were formally granted production rights in 1953. After 1964 production switched to stainless steel but before this the frames were chrome plated. The chairs we are offering here are chrome plated and therefore must have been produced before 1964 and most likely in the 1950’s by Knoll in East Greenville, Pennsylvania.
The leather cushions are original. The seat cushions are tufted (buttoned) on one side and each of the 20 separate panels are individually stitched and welted. The back cushions are produced in the same way and have a flat leather panel on the back. The leather is in very good condition.
Some of the leather straps have been replaced and they are all riveted to the chrome frame as they should be. There are minimal signs of rubbing on the chrome with no pitting or losses. They are in excellent condition and are testament to the quality of manufacture.
Chairs of this age and in this condition are rarely available.
